A pair of mittens can use identical motifs or mirrored ones, but the garment construction is not simply a flipped picture. Thumb placement, palm fabric, shaping, and fit need their own instructions. Decide which part of the design is meant to match.
Separate the decorative panel
Identify the stitches available on the back of the hand and keep palm and thumb decisions distinct. Check the motif height against the section before shaping. Use gauge from the intended colorwork rather than a generic chart estimate.
Review a mirrored version
A horizontal flip can create a pleasing pair for an asymmetric color motif. The editor moves cells but preserves stitch symbols, so any directional shaping requires deliberate review. Lettering and logos may need to remain readable rather than mirrored.
Test the usable fabric
Carried yarn can affect stretch and warmth. Check the reverse side and how the sample behaves around the hand. Keep a clear chart name for left and right if the designs differ so the pair is not accidentally made from the same export.
- Label left and right charts explicitly.
- Keep thumb instructions outside the decorative grid.
- Review long runs across panel edges.
Save the first motif as JSON, create a mirrored draft, and compare both charts before attaching them to a complete mitten plan.
